On 17 October, the world lost a true legend. It was with deep sorrow that the Ryal Bush Transport family announced the passing of Wayne "Ox" McEwan. A larger-than-life character, Ox was a cornerstone of the New Zealand transport industry and a true pioneer of deer transport in this country. His contributions shaped not only the foundations of Ryal Bush Transport but also that of the entire deer transport industry.
Ox made an impact in every corner of New Zealand, where many deer farmers will fondly recall the early days of the deer industry with Ox and his team of drivers from Ryal Bush Transport.
His influence in the development of quality assurance standards is a legacy that will endure. Ox’s practical approach and steady leadership as the chairman of the Deer QA Transport Committee helped ensure the highest standards in deer welfare and transport to this day.
A deer farmer and registered velvetter, Ox had a lifelong passion for the industry and was deeply respected by his peers. The deer industry mourns his passing and will forever remember his contributions.
Ox will be dearly missed by his family – Ann, Shannon and Meredith, Bradley and Kirsten, Kylie and Rei, Karen – and his cherished grandchildren, extended family, and loved ones. He leaves behind a lasting legacy, not only in his work but in the lives of all who had the privilege to know him.
A service celebrating the life of Wayne “Ox” McEwan was held on 25 October at Bill Richardson Transport World, Invercargill, which was followed by an interment at Forest Hill Cemetery. Our deepest condolences to Ox’s family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time.
RIP Ox. You will be missed.
