Dry matter production per hectare has been th etraditional yardstick by which plant breeders have selected and developed new forage cultivars. Recent developments indicate that an association between greater dry matter and enhanced farm profitability can not always be assumed. Improved digestibility through the summer months and different endophyte alkaloid profiles associated with different high endophyte perennial ryegrass cultivars may, in part explain significantly different animal performance across ryegrass cultivars
