VelTrak password issues | Issue 194

Nov 3, 2023

Having trouble logging into VelTrak to approve your VSD? Being advised you have the wrong or incorrect user name or password?

This will most likely be due to the storage of VelTrak moving from a land-based storage unit to the cloud back in March.
We had to change the password system that VelTrak uses, and this means that everyone, including us, needed to change their password. You should only have to do this once.

How do I change my password?

Go to VelTrak like you normally do (https://veltrak.velvet.org.nz) and click the ‘Forgotten your password?’ link at the bottom of the login box. You will be asked to enter your email address. Do this and click the ‘Reset Password’ button. You will then get an email from veltraknotifications@deernz.org (VelTrak via amazonses.com) with a link in it. Click that link and it will take you to the ‘Set Password’ screen.

Why can’t I just use the same password?

You can if it meets the following requirements, but you do need to follow the password change process, so that the new system can record it. Being a security thing, we weren’t able to copy everyone’s passwords across automatically. The requirements are:

  • Be at least eight (8) characters long (same as now)
  • Have at least one CAPITAL letter (same as now).
  • Have at least one number.
  • Have at least one special character, e.g. ! @ # $ ^ & * ( ). A full stop also works fine, but don’t use the plus sign (+), as this can confuse the computer.

Why do I have to add a number/special character to my password? This makes it more difficult.

Current best practice for passwords is to have a mix of numbers, letters and special characters, to make it harder to hack your account. It might be a bit of a pain, but your personal information needs the best protection and that’s what we’re trying to do here.
